Imagine boarding a plane and travelling 7000 miles across the ocean to spend a semester in a completely different place that you had never imagined living in, even in your dreams. This was my personal experience, and it was probably the most exciting yet nerve-wracking thing I have ever done. I got this opportunity as part of the semester exchange programme and Erasmus-plus grant which facilitated me to study at Thomas More University of Applied Sciences in Belgium.
In those five short months at the university, I encountered subjects that broadened my mindset significantly. For instance, the subject of 'Communication Skills' forced me to think psychologically before responding to any conversation, as it focuses on understanding what others think and how to respond wisely, a lifelong skill I acquired. Another noteworthy subject was 'Tackling Global Issues,' which expanded my understanding of diverse cultures through interactions with students from various nations. Learning about their customs, beliefs, and lifestyles was intriguing. This experience has deepened my appreciation for the diversity of our world, enhancing my tolerance and understanding of individuals from different backgrounds.
Beyond academics, I enjoyed trying new cuisines like kip kapsalon and samos jullientje frites (typical Dutch food), made lifelong friends from different cultures, and travelled to other countries with my Schengen visa, which allowed me to visit 28 countries besides Belgium. Additionally, I learned to grasp the Dutch language, which initially posed a significant challenge. However, my determination led me to enroll in a renowned government institution, where I achieved certification in Dutch up to the A2 level, all while maintaining a full course load at the university.
This semester exchange program has empowered me to enhance my career prospects. I am grateful for the opportunity to learn about Psychology and the Internet of Things from some of the finest teachers and institutions worldwide. Moreover, I feel more confident about securing a good placement in my future job search. The Department of International Affairs at CGC Landran played a pivotal role in making this experience possible and successful. They provided comprehensive support, from facilitating the exchange program to ensuring we had access to resources that helped us adapt to the new environment. Their guidance was instrumental in navigating the challenges of studying abroad, and adjusting to a different academic system.
I feel empowered and more confident about my future career prospects after completing this semester exchange program. I am particularly thankful to CGC Landran for its commitment to providing students with the best opportunities, especially in terms of placements. With this enriching experience behind me, I am now firmly focused on my future exams, hoping to secure a good placement. Wish me luck!
