About the Course
Biotechnology is the integration of natural sciences and engineering sciences in order to achieve the application of organisms, cells, part thereof and molecular analogues for products and services. The curriculum of these programs has been designed so that it imparts education compatible to the needs of industry and academia. The M.Sc. students are provided an opportunity to undergo industrial training/project in final year which helps them to handle independent projects in academia and industry.Objectives of the B.Sc. Biotechnology Program
- To impart advanced knowledge and understanding of various aspects of biotechnology at par with national and international levels
- To generate skilled manpower in different areas of biotechnology to serve the Biotechnology related industries and provide trained manpower.
- To prepare the students for pursuing research in industry and academic laboratories
Career Prospects
The science of biotechnology, a knowledge based science concerning biology, agriculture, medicine, environment, and nutrition is set for an exponential growth. According to a report of Confederation of Indian Industry, the Indian biotechnology industry is poised to generate Rs 6110 crore-7520 cr by 2015. The report further states that India is in top 12 biotech destinations in the world and is the third biggest in Asia-Pacific in terms of the number of biotech companies. The Union budget presented by Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee in 2010 provides for a 32 per cent increase in the allocation for the Department of Biotechnology in the Ministry of Science and Technology. Following up on the declaration of 2010-20 as the Decade of Innovation, the budget also provides for an enhancement of the weighted deduction on expenditure incurred on in-house Biotechnology R&D from 150 to 200 per cent.Needless to say, biotechnology offers a plethora of career opportunities in India and abroad. Major Career options are Academicians, Research associate, Research scientist, Engineer (Chemical, Electrical, Environmental and Industrial), Sales representative, Marketing and Business development manager.
Eligibility Criteria
For M.Sc. (Biotechnology) minimum requirement is B. Sc. Biotechnology or B. Sc. (Medical/Zoology/Botany/Microbiology/Genetics/Biochemistry/Pharmacy/Agriculture/Veterinary/Engineering /Nursing/Medical Lab Technology or B.Tech (Biotech), MBBS/BDS/ or B.Sc (Hons) from any Honours school in any of these fields.Admission Procedure
